Over the decades the shape of the GSD has changed from a natural wolf shape to a roach-backed crippled looking dog.
Photo of Horand von Grafrath (originally named Hektor v Linksrhein) the original dog bought by Captain Max Von Stephanitz and the first registered dog of the Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde formed in 1899. He was a yellow/grey colour and his grandsire Greif was white. Next to him is Rin Tin Tin, the black and silver German Shepherd Dog, who made the breed so popular.
